Southern Transylvania's riding country: wildflower meadows and bear-inhabited foothills crossed on multi-day treks between Saxon villages.
Why here
Southern Transylvania is Europe's last great lowland-wilderness riding country: wildflower meadows that haven't seen chemicals, Carpathian foothills inhabited by bears and wolves, and Saxon villages spaced a day's ride apart. The operations are dedicated riding farms rather than pony-ride concessions: Equus Silvania was founded by the Prombergers, the couple who also lead Foundation Conservation Carpathia, tying the riding directly to Europe's largest rewilding project, and Count Kalnoky's estate at Miklosvar runs three-to-five-day treks capped at eight riders with two guides. Centre-based rides take novices; the treks want a secure trot and canter across country.
Best months
May to October, with June wildflowers and September light the prizes. Trail treks require confident riding at all paces; centre stays school novices first. Farm-guesthouse lodging is part of the format.
Getting there & around
An hour from Brasov; operators arrange transfers. Multi-day treks move between village guesthouses with luggage shuttled.
