Horse Riding / Equestrian in Gjirokaster
The UNESCO stone city of the south, base for riding the old caravan trails of the Vjosa valley and Zagoria.
Why here
Southern Albania's riding follows the old caravan trails, routes that pack horses served into living memory, through the Vjosa Wild River National Park and the Zagoria valley's stone villages. Caravan Horse Riding Albania, based at Gjirokaster since 2011 with its own herd of forty-five, runs day rides through multi-day trails including a twelve-day Vjosa expedition staged twice a year; a Permet guesthouse operation covers the Lengarica canyon rides at the valley's far end. The UNESCO stone city itself, Ottoman roofs stacked on a mountainside, anchors the non-riding days.
Best months
April to June and September to October; summer rides start early against the heat. Day rides take beginners; the multi-day trails want an intermediate seat. Group sizes stay tiny.
Getting there & around
Gjirokaster is three and a half hours from Tirana or an hour from the Greek border. Multi-day trails move between village guesthouses.
