Why here

Dauin and nearby Apo Island are the established anchor of Asian freediving. AIDA and Molchanovs schools here teach full programmes from beginner pool work through advanced depth training, and the local community has accumulated a depth of experience rarely found outside of Dahab. Apo Island — a marine sanctuary 30 minutes by boat — offers pristine reef walls that make depth training sessions genuinely beautiful rather than purely technical. The combination of serious institutional infrastructure, warm clear water, and a real local freediving community makes Dauin the most complete school destination in Asia for freedivers who want genuine progression.

Best months

JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Visibility 20-30m, best November-May. Water temp 26-29°C year-round, dropping slightly to 26°C in March. No thermocline — consistent from surface to depth. Protected bay with calm surface conditions most of the year. Avoid July-September (typhoon risk; rough conditions, some schools operate reduced schedules). Apo Island (30 min by outrigger): marine sanctuary, no fishing since 1982 — excellent reef health, walls to 40m, resident sea turtles and reef sharks. Shore sites: Bacong Pier and Ducomi Pier offer 15-25m depth with rich macro life accessible directly from the beach.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly to Dumaguete (DGT) or Sibulan — connections via Manila or Cebu from international hubs. Dauin resort area is 20 minutes south of Dumaguete city by tricycle ($1-2) or habal-habal. Main schools: Freedive Beyond and Dumagat Freedive International, both offering accommodation-plus-course packages. Cost of living is low: full AIDA 2 course plus one week of accommodation typically $400-600 USD. Apo Island can be done as a long day trip or as an overnight stay. Combine with whale shark encounters in Oslob (1 hour north) and a boat trip to Siquijor.
