Freediving in Kona
The leeward coast of Hawaii Island, sheltered by two volcanoes, where the seabed falls to thousands of feet within a mile or two of shore.
Why here
The Kona coast falls into thousands of feet of water within a mile or two of shore, which is why Hawaii Island is a freediving and blackwater destination rather than a reef destination. Visibility runs 23 to 30 meters most of the year and water sits near 26C in November. Manta rays feed off the coast at night year round, humpbacks arrive through December, and pelagic encounters are a normal part of a training day rather than a lucky one. Instruction here is FII, which is uncommon outside the United States and worth seeking out if you want that system specifically. This is a small scene: two operators, both FII, both teaching in small groups.
Best months
November water is around 26.6C and December around 25.6C, with visibility typically 23 to 30 meters. The Kona coast is sheltered by the bulk of Mauna Loa and Hualalai, so it is calm far more often than the windward side, but winter northwest swell wraps in from December onward and can close entries for a day or two at a time. January through March brings the biggest swell and also the reliable humpback window; December sightings are real but early season. Manta rays are seen on roughly four nights in five, not guaranteed.
Getting there & around
Both operators run scheduled cohorts plus private and small-group courses arranged on request. October and November are confirmed running months and a December cohort sits on the calendar, but published dates are sparse and go up late, so contact the school directly rather than waiting for a booking page to show your week. Kona Freedivers operates as the freediving arm of Kona Honu Divers and shares its shop and booking system rather than trading independently. Jules of the Sea is a single FII instructor teaching in Kailua-Kona and Waimea. Fly into Kona International, rent a car, and expect United States pricing, which makes this the most expensive destination in this set. Blackwater diving is offered locally but as a scuba and snorkel product, not as freediving instruction.
