Freediving in Koh TaoTH
A small, laid-back island in the Gulf of Thailand that became one of the world's biggest scuba certification hubs almost by accident. Warm, calm, current-light water and rock-bottom course prices turned a sleepy backpacker island into the place more people learn to dive than almost anywhere else on earth.
Why here
Koh Tao's scuba infrastructure turned out to be just as good a fit for freediving: warm, current-light, visibility-heavy water close to shore, and a training culture already built around getting people comfortable underwater fast. The island now has some of the highest-volume freediving schools in the world, including the first dedicated AIDA school on Koh Tao and the Asia headquarters of Apnea Total, one of the sport's largest global training systems. Depth lines run right off buoys a short swim from the beach, so there is no boat commute eating into training time, and the sheer density of instructors means small classes and flexible scheduling even in peak season.
Best months
Freediving runs year-round with the same seasonal pattern as the island's scuba diving: March through September is the clearest, calmest stretch, while the October-December monsoon brings rougher surface chop that can push training closer to shore. Water temperature stays in the high 20s Celsius all year.
Getting there & around
Fly into Koh Samui (USM) or Surat Thani (URT) and connect by ferry; Koh Tao has no airport, so all access is by boat. Freediving schools are concentrated around Sairee Beach, close to most of the island's dive schools. Courses can usually be booked a day or two ahead outside the busiest December-January window.
