Freediving in GozoMT
Malta's second island offers world-class freediving instruction in English, with underwater topography — arches, caves, and walls — set in exceptionally clear Mediterranean water. World-champion level coaches are based here, and the small island format makes intensive training stays highly efficient.
Why here
Gozo solves a specific problem: world-class freediving instruction in English, within a short European flight, with genuinely clear Mediterranean water. World-champion level coaches operate here, and the underwater terrain — the Blue Dome arch, Cathedral Cave, Reqqa Point wall — is among the most visually dramatic in the Mediterranean. A small island (14km x 7km) where everything is close together makes it easy to train intensively over a short trip. The ferry crossing from Malta adds almost no friction, and English is co-official with Maltese.
Best months
Visibility 20-35m May-October, 12-20m in winter. Water temp 15°C December-February, 27°C August-September. Protected sites available in almost any wind direction — Gozo's coast faces all compass points, meaning calm-water access is nearly always possible somewhere. Key sites: Inland Sea (natural sea arch exit — swim through to open Mediterranean, dramatic); Reqqa Point (deep wall descent for advanced, needs boat or long swim); Blue Hole (8m arch connecting to a 60m+ wall). Minimal current at most sites.
Getting there & around
Fly to Malta International Airport — direct from all major European hubs, well-connected. Ferry from Cirkewwa (north Malta) to Mgarr, Gozo: 25-minute crossing, runs frequently including evenings. Car hire on Gozo advisable. Freediving centres (Deep Med Centre, Apnea Total Malta) offer structured course packages that include accommodation — book 2-3 months ahead for May-September. English-speaking throughout. Small island, no long drives. Costs are mid-range for Europe.
