Flight Experiences in WanakaNZ
A lakeside town in the Southern Alps of the South Island, at the foot of Mount Aspiring National Park. Home to the Warbirds and Wheels museum, the biennial Warbirds Over Wanaka international airshow, and aerobatic training operators flying over some of the most dramatic landscape in New Zealand.
Why here
Wanaka hosts New Zealand's most serious collection of vintage and warbird aviation, and the best access to aerobatic flight experiences in the Southern Hemisphere. The Warbirds and Wheels museum maintains a flying collection of WWII aircraft including Spitfires, Mustangs, and Kittyhawks. The biennial Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow (Easter weekend, even years) is one of the top five airshows in the world. But the everyday offering matters too: aerobatic companies based at Wanaka Airport run dual-control flights in Pitts and Extra-type aircraft over the Southern Alps, with instruction available for those who want to actually fly, not just ride.
Best months
November through April is the New Zealand summer, giving the best weather for both mountain scenic flights and aerobatics. The airshow runs Easter weekend in even-numbered years; book accommodation a year out for that event. Wanaka weather can change fast with fronts moving through; aerobatic flights need VMC (visual meteorological conditions) for the full experience. Winter (May-September) is quieter, some operators have reduced schedules, but the snow-covered Alps backdrop for any flying is spectacular.
Getting there & around
Fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN), 70km from Wanaka by road (one hour). Wanaka Airport has no commercial service. Aerobatic and warbird experience providers are based directly at Wanaka Airport; bookings online or by phone. The airshow sells a separate flight experience program on designated days; check the official site for what is offered in the current year. New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) required for most nationalities; apply online before departure.
