Queenstown has helicopter companies with direct access to Fiordland, Mount Cook, the Remarkables, and the Milford Sound valley. What makes it one of the better helicopter destinations in the world is the proximity of genuinely remote mountain and fiord terrain to a well-resourced tourist town. The Milford Sound flight landing is the classic program: 45 minutes of flying through fiord country, landing in the sound itself, before returning over the Divide. More ambitious programs set down on glaciers or the Tasman snowfields. The quality of the terrain and the professionalism of the operators are both consistently high.
Best months
October through April (New Zealand summer) is optimal: better weather windows, more daylight, and clearer mountain visibility. Fiordland receives extraordinarily high rainfall year-round; the helicopter companies have developed routes that manage around weather. Winter (May-September) can produce spectacular clear days with snow on the ranges, but longer periods of weather hold-down. Cloud and rain can delay or cancel flights at any time of year; most operators offer rebooking without penalty.
Getting there & around
Fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN) with direct connections from Auckland, Christchurch, Sydney, and Melbourne. Helicopter operators are based at Queenstown Airport and in town. The main companies (The Helicopter Line, Glacier Southern Lakes, Heli Glenorchy) all operate similar programs at comparable standards. Book at least 24-48 hours ahead in summer; walk-ins sometimes possible in shoulder season. NZeTA required for most nationalities.
