Flight Experiences in MaunBW

The gateway town to the Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Maun's airstrip is one of the busiest in sub-Saharan Africa during peak season, with light aircraft the primary way to access the remote camps and channels of the Delta interior.

Why here

The Okavango Delta has no road access to its interior. Light aircraft are how you get there. The flight from Maun over the Delta channels to a remote bush camp is not a transfer; it is the first and one of the best wildlife experiences of a Botswana trip, with the aerial perspective of the Delta's intricate waterway system giving a view that changes completely with the seasons. Beyond camp transfers, specialist operators run dedicated aerial photography flights low over the Delta at first and last light, following herds, tracking predators, and working the kinds of shots that ground-level access cannot give.

Best months

June through October is peak season: dry conditions concentrate wildlife around water, the channels are at their highest from the Okavango flood, and temperatures are comfortable. April-May sees the flood arriving with different wildlife distribution. November-March (wet season) has fewer visitors but the landscape is lush and green, and birding is exceptional. Aerial photography conditions are best in dry season when dust and haze are minimal.

Getting there & around

Complex logistics

International flights connect to Maun airport (MUB) via Johannesburg (OR Tambo), typically 2-hour connection. Air Botswana and various safari charter companies operate the Maun hub. Most camps are booked as packages including the light aircraft transfer from Maun; standalone aerial photography flights can be arranged through operators such as Wild Wings Safaris. Botswana visa policy varies by nationality; check before travel. Yellow fever vaccination required if arriving from an endemic country.

Wilderness Air

Outfitter

Wilderness Air is the primary light aircraft charter network serving the Okavango Delta from Maun, connecting the main remote safari camps in the Delta and Linyanti. Operating as part of the Wilderness group, it also provides aerial transfers for photography-focused travelers and can be arranged for dedicated aerial photography flights over the Delta. Serves as the primary air access to most high-end camps in the northern Delta system.
