The bay is shallow and flat for hundreds of metres out, so a beginner can stand up and reset almost anywhere, while the trade winds blow side-onshore, pushing a drifting rider back to the beach rather than out to sea. Add warm, clear water, a sandy bottom with no rocks or coral, and a vast open space free of crowds, and you have conditions that draw learners and freeride cruisers from all over. The north-east trades typically blow from about mid-November through mid-August, most reliably in the winter and spring, with wind speeds in the 12 to 20-plus knot range suited to mid-size kites. Almost all of the country's kiteboarding happens here, taught by schools whose instructors are certified by the International Kiteboarding Organization. It is a spot where a complete beginner can get up and riding in a few days and an experienced rider can carve endless flat water, which is exactly why Long Bay has become the marquee kite destination of the Turks and Caicos.

Cockburn Townyear-roundThe Turks and Caicos National Museum, in the old capital of Cockburn Town, holds the deepest story in the country. Its centrepiece is the Molasses Reef Wreck, the remains of a small Spanish or Portuguese caravel that went down on the Caicos reef in the early 1500s, the oldest European shipwreck ever excavated in the Western Hemisphere. Around it, the museum traces the whole arc of the islands' past, from the Lucayan people who first lived here, through the Bermudian salt rakers who built the salinas and the low stone houses of the town outside, to the natural history of the reefs and the islands' odd footnote as John Glenn's splashdown point in 1962. It all sits inside Guinep House, itself a two-hundred-year-old former salt merchant's home and one of the oldest buildings on Grand Turk, run by a small non-profit foundation. A walk around Cockburn Town's crumbling, salt-era Front Street ties the exhibits to the streetscape outside, making this the single best place to understand where the Turks and Caicos came from.

Behind the resorts of Providenciales lies a shallow labyrinth of red-mangrove channels, seagrass flats and tiny cays that no motorboat can enter, so the only way in is by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Gliding through the narrow mangrove tunnels, you pass juvenile reef fish, lemon and nurse sharks, rays, conch, turtles and wading birds using the roots as a nursery, part of the Ramsar-listed wetland system that spreads across North, Middle, East and South Caicos. The water is glassy and clear, the paddling is easy and sheltered even when the coast is windy, and a good guide reads the ecosystem for you, from the way the mangroves build the islands to the creatures hiding in the shallows. This is minimum-impact travel in a place that pioneered it, a slow, close-up way to understand the banks that make the country's diving and fishing so rich, and a welcome contrast to a week spent only on the sand.

Middle CaicosJan Feb Mar Apr Nov DecMiddle Caicos is where the flat, beachy Turks and Caicos turns rugged and wild. The island's north shore rises into limestone cliffs cut with blowholes, sea caves and hidden coves, and the Crossing Place Trail runs along it for miles, retracing the old footpath islanders once used to cross between settlements. The walk links Mudjin Harbour, a cliff-ringed beach that is one of the most striking spots in the country, to secret beaches and rolling green headlands, with the open Atlantic crashing below. Inland lies Conch Bar Caves, the largest cave system in the Turks and Caicos and one of the largest in the region, a mile and a half of dark passages hung with stalactites and columns, home to four species of bat and tidal pools, once mined for bat guano and used by the Lucayans before that. A national park managed by the National Trust, the caves can only be entered with a guide. Between the cliff trail and the caves, Middle Caicos offers the country's best walking and a rare, quiet look at its natural and human history, far from the resorts of Provo.

Wildlife Safaris

Salt CayJan Feb Mar AprSalt Cay is the best place in the Turks and Caicos to meet North Atlantic humpback whales. Each winter, from roughly mid-January to April, humpbacks migrate south from the cold feeding grounds off Canada and New England to breed and calve on the Silver Bank, and the deep Columbus Passage that runs right past Salt Cay funnels them within sight of shore. Adult whales over fifteen metres long pass so close that they can be watched from the beach, and small boats take visitors out to sit with mothers and calves, breaching adults and singing males in the clear open water. The island itself is a step back in time, a quiet salt-era outpost of windmills, salinas and donkeys where nothing moves fast, so the whale season is intimate rather than industrial, run by a handful of local boats rather than big fleets. Pairing the migration with a stay on one of the Caribbean's most unspoiled islands makes this a rare winter wildlife trip, and one of the few places where humpbacks reliably come this near to land.

MaskanooGrace BayDecMaskanoo is the Turks and Caicos at its loudest and most joyful, and Grace Bay Road is where it happens. Every Boxing Day, 26 December, the road fronting Saltmills Plaza and Regent Village closes to traffic and fills, from dusk into the night, with junkanoo bands in towering, shimmering crepe-paper costumes, driving a wall of sound from goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles and brass as they parade and dance down the street. Around them, the country's biggest cultural gathering of the year unfolds, over a thousand residents and visitors, stalls of local food, live music and a street-party atmosphere. Maskanoo, a play on masquerade and junkanoo, was revived in 2009 as a modern take on the islanders' Junkanoo tradition, itself carried home from the Bahamas by Turks and Caicos families, with roots in the days when the enslaved took to the streets in masked celebration at Christmas. It is free, it is open to everyone, and standing in the crowd as a band thunders past is the most Turks and Caicos thing a visitor can do in December.
