Maskanoo
The heart of Providenciales tourism, a twelve-mile arc of white sand and turquoise water on the island's north shore, fronted by the Princess Alexandra National Park and the barrier reef. Its calm lagoon is the base for the Turks and Caicos dive fleet, which runs the short trip out to the reef wall and the deeper walls off Northwest Point, West Caicos and French Cay.

Why here
Maskanoo is the Turks and Caicos at its loudest and most joyful, and Grace Bay Road is where it happens. Every Boxing Day, 26 December, the road fronting Saltmills Plaza and Regent Village closes to traffic and fills, from dusk into the night, with junkanoo bands in towering, shimmering crepe-paper costumes, driving a wall of sound from goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles and brass as they parade and dance down the street. Around them, the country's biggest cultural gathering of the year unfolds, over a thousand residents and visitors, stalls of local food, live music and a street-party atmosphere. Maskanoo, a play on masquerade and junkanoo, was revived in 2009 as a modern take on the islanders' Junkanoo tradition, itself carried home from the Bahamas by Turks and Caicos families, with roots in the days when the enslaved took to the streets in masked celebration at Christmas. It is free, it is open to everyone, and standing in the crowd as a band thunders past is the most Turks and Caicos thing a visitor can do in December.

Maskanoo is held once a year on Boxing Day, 26 December, on Grace Bay Road in Providenciales, beginning around dusk in the early evening and running into the night. It is a free street festival with no ticketed seating; you simply join the crowd along the route, which fills quickly, so arrive early for a good spot near the parade. Nights in late December are warm and pleasant. The event centres on the stretch fronting Saltmills Plaza and Regent Village, which is closed to cars, so plan for parking a walk away or a taxi drop-off nearby.
Getting there & around
The festival runs on Grace Bay Road in central Providenciales, walking distance from most Grace Bay hotels and a short drive from the airport, so no special travel is needed beyond being on the island on Boxing Day. It is free and unticketed, held in the evening; come early to claim a good vantage point, since the roadside fills and the closed section around Saltmills Plaza and Regent Village draws the whole island. Book Providenciales lodging well ahead for the Christmas week, when the island is at its busiest.

It created and hosts Maskanoo, the trademarked Boxing Day street festival on Grace Bay Road, revived in 2009 as a modern take on the islands' Junkanoo tradition and now the largest cultural event of the year, drawing more than a thousand people to a night of junkanoo bands, food and music.
