Inside the star-shaped Fort of Sao Joao Batista, a cohort of silversmiths hand-works fine filigree jewellery using techniques and simple tools passed down from the island's centuries as a Swahili and Arab trading port. Visitors can sit with the smiths, watch thread-fine silver twisted and soldered into earrings and pendants, and buy pieces directly from the makers. The craft was revived and expanded into a community project that now supports dozens of artisans. It sits inside a wider Ibo experience of decaying colonial architecture, mangrove channels and dhow crossings through the Quirimbas.

Freediving

A nutrient-rich upwelling off the Inhambane coast pulls plankton close to shore, and with it a resident population of whale sharks that turns up year-round rather than only on migration. The signature outing is the ocean safari, a small-boat run beyond the break to snorkel and freedive with whale sharks, giant mantas, humpback whales in season, dolphins and turtles. This is breath-hold territory more than tank diving, close to the surface where the megafauna feed and cruise. Operators run apnea courses and guided safaris straight off the beach at Praia do Tofo.

From the mainland town of Vilanculos, wooden sailing dhows run out to Magaruque, Benguerra and Bazaruto islands, threading channels where dolphins, turtles and manta rays are common and dugongs still graze the seagrass meadows. The archipelago is a protected marine national park, so the sailing doubles as slow wildlife watching, with snorkelling stops on Two Mile Reef and time ashore on islands ringed by white dunes. Trips range from a day under sail to multi-night island camping, wind and tide setting the pace.

Civil war emptied the park of more than 90 percent of its large animals, and since 2004 the Gorongosa Restoration Project has rebuilt it from almost nothing. Elephant numbers have climbed from around 200 to close to 1,000, lions have recovered, and African wild dogs and leopards have been reintroduced to a landscape where they had vanished. Game drives cross vast floodplains and fever-tree forest, boat safaris on Lake Urema pass hippo pods and crocodiles, and the birdlife runs to hundreds of species. This is not a manicured reserve, it is a working restoration you can watch happening, guided by people who live it.
