In this island national park in the Bijagos Archipelago, hippos have adapted to life between fresh inland lakes and the salt lagoons and beaches of the Atlantic, moving through mangrove and palm savanna on an island with no roads. Reaching them is a slow, quiet business: boat from Bissau through the archipelago's channels, then walking with local Bijago guides who know where the animals rest, past the sacred site of one of the first island villages. The wider park and its waters also hold marine turtles, manatees, Nile crocodiles, dolphins and a great range of birds, and the Bijago communities keep some of West Africa's most distinctive island cultures. It is low-volume, community-run wildlife travel in one of the least-visited corners of the continent.
