Wildlife Safaris in Orango
The largest island of Guinea-Bissau's Bijagos Archipelago and the heart of Orango National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of savanna, palm forest, mangrove and brackish lagoon. Orango is the one place on earth where hippos have adapted to salt water, swimming between beaches and inland lakes, and is reached by boat from Bissau through the channels of the archipelago.
Why here
Orango is the only place in the world where you can track salt-water hippos, and the setting is as strange as the animal. In this island national park in the Bijagos Archipelago, hippos have adapted to life between fresh inland lakes and the salt lagoons and beaches of the Atlantic, moving through mangrove and palm savanna on an island with no roads. Reaching them is a slow, quiet business: boat from Bissau through the archipelago's channels, then walking with local Bijago guides who know where the animals rest, past the sacred site of one of the first island villages. The wider park and its waters also hold marine turtles, manatees, Nile crocodiles, dolphins and a great range of birds, and the Bijago communities keep some of West Africa's most distinctive island cultures. It is low-volume, community-run wildlife travel in one of the least-visited corners of the continent.
Best months
The dry season, roughly November to May, is the practical time to visit, with the specialist island wildlife circuits running October to December; the rains from June bring heavy weather and harder boat travel. Days are hot and humid year-round. This is remote, low-infrastructure travel: boat transfers of several hours, simple eco-lodge accommodation, walking on soft ground and sand, and tides that govern the timetable. Hippo sightings are wild and not guaranteed, and a good local guide makes the difference.

Guinea-Bissau is under a US State Dept Level 3 'Reconsider Travel' advisory over crime and periodic political instability, including unrest in late 2025, and several governments advise caution particularly around the mainland capital (as of 2026-07). The Bijagos Archipelago itself is remote from mainland politics, but demonstrations and disruption in Bissau can affect flights and transfers, so check current advice before booking. Access is a flight to Bissau, then a boat transfer of several hours to Orango arranged by the lodge or operator; there is no independent way in. Bring cash, insect protection and light layers, and let the operator handle boats, park permits and local Bijago guides.

Orango Parque Hotel
OutfitterOrango Parque Hotel is the only lodge inside Orango National Park in Guinea-Bissau's Bijagos Archipelago, run as a non-profit by a local Bijago association with profits reinvested into island schools, clinics and clean-water wells. It is the base for tracking the park's rare salt-water hippos in the lagoons and beaches, and runs the eight-day Tchon Bijago wildlife circuit through the islands, offered October to December with a small number of places.
