FoumbanJan Feb Nov DecFoumban is the seat of one of Africa's oldest surviving monarchies, the Bamoun kingdom, whose sultans have ruled in an unbroken line traced to 1394. The old royal palace, built in 1917 and still the sultan's residence, faces a startling new royal museum opened in the 2020s in the shape of a giant spider astride a two-headed serpent, both Bamoun royal emblems. Inside are roughly 12,500 objects: beaded thrones and buffalo masks, war drums, the regalia of Sultan Ibrahim Njoya, the reforming king who around 1900 invented his own Bamum script and even an artificial language. A short walk away, the Rue des Artisans is one of the best places in Central Africa to watch lost-wax bronze casting, weaving and embroidery, the living craft side of the same court culture. This is the cultural heart of western Cameroon, away from the coast and the conflict zones, and it rewards a slow, curious visit.

Mount Cameroon Race of HopeMount CameroonJan FebThe Mount Cameroon Race of Hope is one of the hardest one-day mountain races anywhere, a run from the town of Buea to the 4095 metre summit and back in a single morning. First held in 1973 and once sponsored by Guinness, it now draws several hundred Cameroonian and international runners who cover about 38 kilometres and some 3000 metres of ascent from the Molyko stadium, up through forest and lava fields to the crater rim, then straight back down. The winning men finish the whole climb and descent in under four and a half hours, an effort that has made local champions into national heroes. There is no organiser selling a package here; you enter through the athletics federation, line up at the stadium, and run the mountain that towers over the coast. For spectators, race day turns Buea into a carnival of drummers and crowds lining the lower slopes.

Mount CameroonJan Feb Mar Nov DecMount Cameroon is the biggest single climb in West and Central Africa, an active volcano that lifts from sea-level rainforest to a bare 4095 metre summit in one continuous ascent from the town of Buea. Local people call it Mongo ma Ndemi, the mountain of greatness, and it is one of the most active volcanoes on the continent, with lava flows from its 1999 and 2000 eruptions still crossing the standard route. The classic climb is the two to three day Guinness route, named for the beer company that long backed the mountain race that runs the same ground: up through farmland and montane forest to alpine grassland huts, then across black lava and ash to the crater rim and Fako summit, with the Gulf of Guinea far below. Guides and porters are compulsory and arranged in Buea, and the reward is a genuine equatorial big-mountain traverse that few outside the region have heard of.

NguonFoumbanDecThe Nguon is one of Africa's oldest working political rituals, and in December 2023 UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Held every two years in Foumban over more than six centuries, it is a public reckoning between the Bamoun monarch, the Mfon, and his people. Ritual chiefs gather the community's grievances, then stage a formal trial of the king's governance: the Mfon steps down from power for the duration, hears the indictments read out, and can be fined or, in principle, removed before being asked to renew his mandate. Around this core sit a week of masked dances, war parades, drumming and feasting that fill the palace grounds, ending with the sultan's triumphant return. For a traveler it is a rare chance to witness accountability, satire and kingship performed as living theatre rather than museum piece, in the courtyard of a dynasty that has ruled since 1394.
