Foumban is the seat of one of Africa's oldest surviving monarchies, the Bamoun kingdom, whose sultans have ruled in an unbroken line traced to 1394. The old royal palace, built in 1917 and still the sultan's residence, faces a startling new royal museum opened in the 2020s in the shape of a giant spider astride a two-headed serpent, both Bamoun royal emblems. Inside are roughly 12,500 objects: beaded thrones and buffalo masks, war drums, the regalia of Sultan Ibrahim Njoya, the reforming king who around 1900 invented his own Bamum script and even an artificial language. A short walk away, the Rue des Artisans is one of the best places in Central Africa to watch lost-wax bronze casting, weaving and embroidery, the living craft side of the same court culture. This is the cultural heart of western Cameroon, away from the coast and the conflict zones, and it rewards a slow, curious visit.
Best months
The palace and museums are open through the year and are indoor visits, so weather matters little, though the drier months from November to February make the highland roads and the artisans' street easier. Foumban sits at around 1100 metres, so days are warm and evenings mild. Guides at the palace explain the regalia and dynastic history, and photography rules vary by room, so ask first.
Getting there & around
Foumban is in the West Region, reached by road from Bafoussam, about seven hours from Yaounde or Douala across the Bamileke highlands, or via the airfield at nearby Koutaba. The West Region is far from the Anglophone Southwest and Northwest conflict zones and from the far-north security areas, but check your government advisory for Cameroon before travel. The palace, the royal museum and the Musee des Arts et Traditions Bamoun each charge a small entry fee; a local guide is worth arranging at the palace gate.
