Why go
Ullortuneq, Greenland National Day, is the country's proudest gathering, and Nuuk stages the biggest of it. Held every 21 June on the summer solstice, the longest day, it marks Greenlandic identity and the long road toward self-government. In the capital the day opens with flag-raising ceremonies and marching bands, then fills the town centre with Inuit drum dances, choral and hymn singing, and people of every age wearing the national costume with its beadwork collars and sealskin. Families hold kaffemik, open-house gatherings over coffee and cake, and the celebration runs late under a sun that never sets. There is no ticket and no organiser to book. You turn up in central Nuuk, follow the flags and drums, and stand with the crowd as a whole nation marks its day in the round-the-clock light.

What to expect
National Day is fixed to 21 June, coinciding with the solstice and near-continuous daylight, so plan an evening with no real darkness. The main events run through the day in central Nuuk, from morning flag-raising to afternoon performances and family kaffemik. June weather in Nuuk is mild by Greenland standards but still cool and changeable, so bring layers and a rain shell. It is the single busiest day in town, so book beds and flights well ahead.
Getting there & around
Nuuk has Greenland's busiest airport, with direct flights from Copenhagen and Iceland and domestic connections, and the National Day events centre on the old colonial harbour quarter and the town square, all walkable. Nothing needs to be reserved for the day itself, as it happens in the streets. Accommodation in Nuuk is limited and fills for late June, so book flights and rooms months in advance and dress in warm layers for a long day outdoors.
