Why go

The Ubumuntu Arts Festival takes its name from the Kinyarwanda word for humanity, and its setting says everything: an open-air amphitheater in the grounds of the Kigali Genocide Memorial, above the graves of a quarter of a million people. Founded in 2015 by the Rwandan theater director Hope Azeda, it gathers dance, theater, music and film companies from dozens of countries for a week each July to make work about peace, justice and human dignity. Performances run from late afternoon into the night on a stage lit against the Kigali hills, and admission is free so that the city itself can fill the seats. Coming out of a place of mourning, the festival is a deliberate act of turning grief into shared humanity, and it has become one of East Africa's most distinctive cultural gatherings. You come to sit with a Kigali crowd and watch artists from across the world speak to one another on that particular hill.

When it runs

Held annually over about a week in July at the amphitheater of the Kigali Genocide Memorial, with free admission. The 2026 edition runs 13 to 19 July.

What to expect

Ubumuntu runs annually over about a week in July at the amphitheater of the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The 2026 edition is confirmed for 13 to 19 July. Performances are mostly in the late afternoon and evening and are free to attend, though donations are welcome; the open-air setting means an occasional July shower. Seating is first come, so arrive early for the headline nights.

Getting there & around

The festival is held at the Kigali Genocide Memorial amphitheater at Gisozi, ten to fifteen minutes by taxi or moto from central Kigali. Admission is free with no ticket required, and the full program is published on the festival site ahead of each July edition. Evenings can be cool at altitude, so bring a layer, and combine a daytime visit to the memorial exhibition with an evening performance.
