Why go

TIFF is the film industry's favorite for a reason, a combination of world premieres, public screenings, and an open city that makes it feel less exclusive than European counterparts. Major Oscar contenders traditionally launch here, and the public can buy tickets to virtually all screenings. Toronto's restaurant scene, diverse neighborhoods, and September timing (warm, clear days) make it one of the most livable film festival experiences. The Scotiabank Theatre and TIFF Bell Lightbox are the main hubs, both in a walkable downtown core.

When it runs

Festival runs 10 days in early September.

What to expect

Festival runs 10 days in early September. Toronto in September is warm (18-25°C), dry, and at its best. Tickets go on sale in tiers, TIFF members first, then public. Galas (the big premiere screenings) sell out within minutes; midday screenings of less-hyped films are often available day-of at the box office. The festival is spread across a compact downtown area.

Getting there & around

Toronto Pearson airport is 25 minutes from downtown by UP Express train, one of the best airport-city connections of any festival destination. Accommodation in the Entertainment District is most convenient. Buy a TIFF multi-ticket pass or package for significant savings vs individual tickets. The hub around King and John streets is fully walkable for the main venues.
