Why go
Thimphu Tshechu is the largest of Bhutan's masked-dance festivals, held over three days each autumn in the courtyard of Tashichho Dzong, the fortress that houses the throne room and the central monk body. Monks and lay dancers in brocade robes and carved masks perform the cham, sacred dances that enact the deeds of Guru Rinpoche and the triumph of dharma over demons, watched by thousands of Bhutanese families in their finest kira and gho. The festival closes with the dawn unfurling of a giant applique thongdrel, a scroll whose sight is believed to cleanse sin. Founded in the seventeenth century and expanded in the 1950s, it is both a religious event and the social highlight of the year in the capital. Seats fill early, so a guide and a plan for the dzong courtyard matter.
When it runs
Held over three days each autumn in the courtyard of Tashichho Dzong, on and around the 10th to 12th days of the 8th Bhutanese lunar month (September or early October). Dates shift each year with the lunar calendar. Upcoming: 21 to 23 September 2026; the 2027 dates fall in late September or early October and are confirmed by the Department of Tourism nearer the time.

What to expect
The festival dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar, falling on and around the tenth to twelfth days of the eighth lunar month, which lands in September or early October. In 2026 it runs 21 to 23 September. Days are mild and bright in early autumn, but the stone courtyard is crowded and seating is on the ground, so arrive early and bring sun cover. Photography of the dances is generally allowed in the courtyard, but not always inside the dzong's temples.
Getting there & around
Thimphu is a roughly one-hour drive from Paro airport. Because Bhutan is guided-only, you attend the tshechu with a licensed operator who secures dzong access and a viewing spot and times your days around the dance schedule, and you pay the Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100 per adult per night (the 2026 rate, in force to August 2027) on top of tour costs. The festival coincides with peak season, so book accommodation and the tour several months ahead.
