Why go
Thaipusam at Batu Caves is one of the great religious spectacles of Asia, and anyone in Malaysia in late January or early February should build a day around it. The festival honours the Hindu deity Lord Murugan and falls on the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai, drawing well over a million devotees and onlookers to the caves over its main days. In the hours before dawn, a chariot procession carries the deity roughly 15 kilometres from the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in central Kuala Lumpur out to Batu Caves. There, pilgrims fulfil vows by carrying kavadi, ornate frames often anchored to the body with hooks and skewers, or by bearing pots of milk up the 272 steps to the temple in the cave, many with cheeks and tongues pierced with small spears in acts of devotion. Drumming, chanting and clouds of incense fill the air, and the atmosphere is intense, joyful and completely absorbing. It is a participatory pilgrimage rather than a ticketed show, so come respectfully, dress modestly, go early to beat the crush and the heat, and let the crowd carry you up the steps.

What to expect
Thaipusam falls on the full moon of the Tamil month Thai, in January or February. The main day in 2026 is 1 February (procession building through the preceding night), and in 2027 it falls on 22 January. Crowds are enormous, temperatures high and the 272 steps steep and slippery underfoot, so arrive very early, carry water, wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and be prepared for dense crowds. This is a live act of worship: photograph respectfully and follow the guidance of temple stewards.
Getting there & around
Batu Caves is about 13 kilometres north of central Kuala Lumpur and reached directly by KTM Komuter train to Batu Caves station at the foot of the steps, the easiest option on the day given road closures and heavy traffic around the festival. Trains run very frequently but are packed, so allow extra time. Go before dawn to see the procession arrive and to climb the steps before the worst of the heat and crowds. There is no admission charge to the caves.
