Why go
The Teuila Festival is Samoa's flagship cultural week, and the single best time to see fa'a Samoa performed all in one place. Held in Apia every September since 1991 and named for the red ginger that is the national flower, it turns the capital's waterfront parks and the Tuana'imato sports complex into a week of competition and display. The centerpiece is the siva afi, the fire-knife dance, where performers spin a bladed war club wrapped in flame; around it run traditional and contemporary dance contests between village and church groups, choir singing, umu food demonstrations, craft and tattoo stalls, and the fautasi longboat races that send crews of nearly fifty rowers thrashing across Apia harbor. The week builds to the Miss Samoa pageant, a national event as much about oratory and culture as glamour. For a visitor it is a rare, concentrated look at Samoan song, dance and sport that villages spend months rehearsing, and it lands in the drier stretch of the year when Apia is at its most alive.
When it runs
Held annually in Apia in the first week of September, since 1991. Samoa's tourism authority signalled in mid 2026 that the festival may run under a Samoa Arts and Culture Week banner from 2026; confirm dates and format on the official calendar.

What to expect
Teuila runs for roughly a week in early September, historically the first full week, across outdoor venues in and around Apia, so days are warm and mostly dry but bring sun cover and water. Most events are free to watch; the fire-knife finals and the Miss Samoa pageant are the hot tickets and fill up, so arrive early. Note that Samoa's tourism authority signalled in 2026 that the festival may run under a Samoa Arts and Culture Week banner, so confirm the exact dates and program on the official calendar before booking, as the format for that year was still being finalised.
Getting there & around
The festival is centerd on Apia, on the north coast of Upolu about 45 minutes from Faleolo international airport, with events spread between the waterfront parks in town and the Tuana'imato sports complex a short drive inland; taxis and hire cars are the easiest way to move between venues. September is peak season, so book flights and accommodation in the capital well ahead. Most performances are free and open-air; buy tickets in advance for the pageant and fire-knife finals. Check the Samoa Tourism Authority calendar for the confirmed program.
