Why go
Sziget Festival turns an entire Danube island into a week-long city of music every August. Founded in 1993 as Diaksziget, a student festival on Budapest's Obuda Island, it has grown into one of Europe's largest and most internationally mixed music and arts events, with a 2018 edition that drew 565,000 people and a programme of more than a thousand performances a year. The pull is the format as much as the line-up: campers live on the island for the full run, and beyond the headline stages there is theatre, circus, a world-music tent and art installations spread through the woods. It is a festival you inhabit rather than just attend.
When it runs
About a week in mid-August each year on Obuda Island, Budapest, with a camper move-in day the day before. Upcoming: 11 to 15 August 2026 (move-in 10 August); a 2027 edition is expected in mid-August.

What to expect
Sziget runs for about a week in mid-August on Obuda Island, with a move-in day for campers the day before the main programme. August in Budapest is hot, so shade, water and sun cover matter. Most visitors buy multi-day or full-week passes and camp on site; single-day tickets are also sold.
Getting there & around
Obuda Island sits in the Danube in northern Budapest, reached by suburban HEV train, bus or a river boat, a short trip from the city centre. Camping on the island is the standard way to do the full festival; day visitors come and go by public transport. Buy passes and any camping add-on in advance through the official site, as the festival sells out popular days.
