Why go
Semana Santa in Antigua is the great cultural event of Guatemala, a week when the whole colonial city turns into a stage for Holy Week. In the hours before each procession, families and church brotherhoods build alfombras, carpets of dyed sawdust, flowers and pine needles laid the length of the street in intricate patterns, only to have them walked over and destroyed as the procession passes. Enormous wooden floats, some carried by eighty men in purple robes, move slowly through clouds of incense to funeral bands, following routes that can take twelve hours. It grew out of the city's colonial Catholic tradition and is now recognised as some of the most spectacular Easter observance anywhere. Coming for it means crowds and full hotels, but also a living ritual on a scale you will not see elsewhere.
When it runs
Holy Week, the week before Easter Sunday, so the dates move between mid-March and April each year. Processions run daily and peak on Good Friday. 2026 fell in the week ending Easter Sunday 5 April 2026; 2027 is expected in the week ending Easter Sunday 28 March 2027.

What to expect
Semana Santa is the week before Easter Sunday, so it moves between mid-March and April each year. Processions run daily through the week and build to Good Friday, the biggest day, when the carpets and floats are at their most elaborate. Antigua sits at a comfortable altitude, warm by day and cool at night in the dry season. Expect very large crowds, closed streets and accommodation booked out months ahead across the whole city.
Getting there & around
Antigua is about an hour from Guatemala City's international airport by road, easy to reach outside the holiday but slow and congested during Semana Santa itself, when much of the centre closes to traffic. Book accommodation many months ahead, as the entire city fills for Holy Week. The processions are free to watch from the street; a guided walking tour helps you follow the schedule, understand the symbolism and find the best carpet-laying and procession points without missing the key moments.
