Why go
The Reeperbahn Festival is Europe's largest club festival: four September days when around 70 venues across St. Pauli, from the Beatles-era basements to churches, theaters and container yards, run a continuous program of new music. The format is the draw. Instead of a field and headliners you get a wristband and a district, drifting between rooms where next year's breakout acts play to a hundred people, the model that made SXSW famous, executed in the neighborhood where the Beatles learned their trade. The industry conference running alongside keeps the standard high and the bookings ahead of the curve. Hamburg's harbor, Elbphilharmonie and Kiez nightlife wrap around it as the setting.

What to expect

September in Hamburg is mild with rain always possible; everything is indoors or covered. Day and full-festival wristbands sell through the official site and do not usually sell out far ahead, which makes this a rare major festival that tolerates late planning. The Elbphilharmonie's season starts the same month for a high-culture counterweight.
Getting there & around
Hamburg airport is 25 minutes from the center by S-Bahn, and the festival's venue map concentrates around the Reeperbahn and St. Pauli, walkable end to end. Stay anywhere on the U3/S1 lines rather than paying Kiez premiums. Wristband collection points sit on the Reeperbahn itself. The neighborhood runs late and loud during festival week; that is the product, not a defect.
