Why go
PANAFEST and Emancipation Day turn the Cape Coast and Elmina castles into the focus of a Pan-African homecoming. Emancipation Day, marked each year around 1 August, and PANAFEST, the Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival held every two years, bring the diaspora back to the sites of the transatlantic slave trade for remembrance and reconnection. The programme runs between Accra, Cape Coast, Elmina and the Assin Manso ancestral slave river, where the remains of returned ancestors were reburied. Expect a solemn wreath-laying in the castle dungeons, a candle-lit Reverential Night, a grand durbar of chiefs in kente and gold, and days of drumming, dance and theatre. Since the 2019 Year of Return the events have swelled with visitors of African descent from across the Americas and Europe. This is Ghana at its most charged, standing in the exact places the story began.

Emancipation Day is commemorated around 1 August every year at the Cape Coast and Elmina castles; the PANAFEST Pan-African festival runs alongside it every two years in odd-numbered years. What to expect
Emancipation Day falls around 1 August every year, while the full PANAFEST arts festival is biennial, staged in odd-numbered years, with the next major edition expected in late July and early August 2027. The commemorations move between Accra, Cape Coast, Elmina and Assin Manso over roughly a week. August is a minor dry spell on the coast, warm and humid. Book accommodation in Cape Coast and Elmina well ahead, since the festival fills the towns.
Getting there & around
The events are anchored on Cape Coast and Elmina, about three hours west of Accra, with ceremonies also at Assin Manso inland and opening events in the capital. Base yourself in Cape Coast or Elmina for the castle programmes and book early, as rooms are scarce during the festival. Schedules are published by the Ghana Tourism Authority ahead of each edition.
