Why go
The Osun-Osogbo Festival is the great annual rite of the Yoruba river goddess Osun, held over two weeks each August in the Sacred Grove along the Osun river outside Osogbo. It draws worshippers of the Osun tradition and the wider diaspora home from across the Americas, and culminates in the procession of the Arugba, a young votary maiden of royal blood who carries the sacred calabash of sacrifice to the river while the whole town follows. The forest itself is the reason UNESCO inscribed the grove in 2005: it is one of the last stretches of primary high forest in southern Nigeria, threaded with shrines, sanctuaries and the towering cement sculptures of Susanne Wenger's New Sacred Art movement. For a first-timer it is the most complete surviving expression of a living Yoruba religious landscape, ritual and art bound into the same sacred ground.
When it runs
Held annually over about two weeks in late July and early August, culminating in the Arugba procession to the Osun river on the final Friday. The 2026 festival ran 27 July to 7 August; the 2027 edition is expected in the same late-July to early-August window.

What to expect
The festival runs for two weeks in late July and early August, building through a sequence of rites to the climactic Arugba river procession on the final Friday. August is the middle of the rainy season in southwestern Nigeria, warm and humid with heavy afternoon showers, so pack light rain cover and expect mud underfoot in the grove. The procession days draw dense crowds, so arrive early and move with the community rather than against it.
Getting there & around
Osogbo sits about four hours by road northeast of Lagos and around ninety minutes from Ibadan; the nearest airports are Ibadan and Ilorin. Osun State is in the settled southwest of Nigeria and is not covered by the Level 4 state warnings that apply to the far north, though the US State Department keeps an overall Level 3 Reconsider Travel advisory on Nigeria (as of 2026-07). The grove is a short drive from the town centre and entry is managed by the site office. Book accommodation in Osogbo well ahead, as festival week fills the town.
