Why go

The Lithuanian Song Celebration is the emotional core of national culture, a mass song and dance festival that gathers as many as forty thousand singers, dancers and folk musicians in Vilnius roughly every four years. Held mainly at Vingis Park and the Zalgiris stadium, it climaxes in a massed choir concert where tens of thousands sing together and the crowd joins in. The tradition, shared with Latvia and Estonia, was named a UNESCO Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage in 2003, and to watch it is to see a small nation that sang its way out of Soviet rule do the thing that defines it. The next celebration is expected in 2028, after the centennial edition in 2024.

When it runs

Held about every four years over several days in early July at Vingis Park and across Vilnius; a UNESCO-listed tradition. The centennial edition ran in 2024; the next celebration is expected in summer 2028.

What to expect

The celebration is held about every four years over several days in early July, ending in the great open-air choir concert at Vingis Park. It is a summer event with huge crowds; some concerts are ticketed and fill months ahead, while the street processions are free to watch. Between celebrations, smaller regional and schoolchildren song festivals keep the tradition running.

Getting there & around

The main events cluster at Vingis Park, the Zalgiris arena and the Cathedral Square area, all in central Vilnius and reachable on foot or by bus. In a celebration year the city fills, so book accommodation and any ticketed concerts far ahead. Check the official Song Celebration programme for the procession route and concert times.
