Why go
The Lauberhorn is the Hahnenkamm's elegant sibling: the longest downhill on the World Cup circuit at nearly 4.5 kilometers, run since 1930 beneath the Eiger's north face, in a village cars have never reached. Racers hit 160 km/h at the Haneggschuss and thread the Wasserstation railway underpass, and spectators arrive by cog railway, which sets the tone for the whole weekend, less champagne circus than mountain festival. The scenery is the best backdrop in world sport and the vantage points along the course are genuinely alpine, reached on foot or by train. For a purer, quieter version of ski racing's biggest stage, this is the one.

What to expect
Race weekend falls in mid-January, with the downhill as the Saturday centerpiece. Wengen sits at 1,274 meters on a south-facing terrace, so race days are often sunny and bitterly cold by turns; dress for both. The village's car-free scale keeps crowds humane compared with Kitzbühel, but accommodation is limited and books far ahead. The Jungfrau region is a complete winter destination around the races, with the classic Kleine Scheidegg railway ride to the Eiger's foot.
Getting there & around
Zurich airport is about two and a half hours by rail to Lauterbrunnen, then the cog railway up to Wengen; there is no road access. Staying in Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald or Interlaken and training up on race days is the practical play when village beds are gone. Course-side vantage points involve real winter walking, so bring proper boots. Tickets sell through the Lauberhorn organization from autumn and general access is reasonably priced.
