Why go
Baul music is one of the deepest living traditions in Bengal, and Kushtia is where you go to hear it at the source. The Bauls are wandering mystic minstrels who sing of the search for the divine within the human body, accompanying themselves on the one-stringed ektara and the khol drum, and their songs are inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The tradition is bound up with Lalon Shah, the nineteenth-century saint, songwriter and social reformer who preached beyond caste and creed and whose compositions shaped modern Bengali culture and influenced Rabindranath Tagore. Twice a year the ground around his shrine at Cheuria fills with thousands of Bauls and devotees for the Lalon Smaran Utsav, days and nights of continuous singing, ascetics in patched robes, and the smell of woodsmoke and food. This is not a staged concert but a devotional gathering that simply lets outsiders in, the rare chance to sit through a night of Baul song where the tradition actually lives.
When it runs
Bauls and devotees gather at Lalon's shrine in Cheuria, Kushtia, twice a year: for about three days around Dol Purnima (the Falgun full moon, roughly February to March) and for three days from 1 Kartik (around 16 October), the anniversary of Lalon Shah's death. The Dol Purnima dates shift with the lunar calendar each year; the autumn festival falls near mid-October.

What to expect
The gatherings happen twice a year at Lalon''s shrine: around Dol Purnima on the Falgun full moon, usually in February or March, and from 1 Kartik in mid-October, marking the anniversary of Lalon''s death. The Dol Purnima date moves with the lunar calendar, so confirm the year''s dates before travelling; the October festival is the larger and more fixed of the two. The music runs deep into the night, and the site is crowded, dusty and basic, so come prepared for long hours, little sleep and simple conditions.
Getting there & around
There is no ticket office and no organiser to book through; the festival is free and open, held on the shrine grounds at Cheuria a few kilometres from Kushtia town. Kushtia is reached by long-distance bus or train from Dhaka, a journey of several hours across the river country of western Bangladesh, with local rickshaws and auto-rickshaws covering the last stretch to the shrine. Accommodation in Kushtia is limited and fills during the festivals, so book ahead or plan a long day trip from a nearby town. Dress modestly, respect the devotional setting, and be ready to sit on the ground through the night to hear the singing.
