Why go
Junkanoo is the soul of the Bahamas made loud, and Bay Street in Nassau is where it beats hardest. Twice a year, in the small hours of Boxing Day and again on New Year's Day, thousands of costumed performers push down the street in rival groups, each with its own theme, in towering costumes of crepe paper and cardboard, driving a wall of sound from goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles and brass. The parade runs from the middle of the night until well after sunrise, judged on music, costume and presentation, and the big groups, names like the Saxons, the Valley Boys and One Family, prepare all year in secret. Its roots reach back to the era of slavery, when the enslaved were given a few days off around Christmas and took to the streets in masked celebration, and it has carried Bahamian identity ever since. Standing in the grandstands or the crowd on Bay Street as a group thunders past in the dark is the single most Bahamian thing a visitor can do, and it costs little more than showing up.
When it runs
Held twice a year in Nassau, before dawn on Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year's Day (1 January), when costumed groups parade down Bay Street to drums, cowbells and brass. The national parades are government-run through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. Upcoming: Boxing Day 26 December 2026 and New Year's Day 1 January 2027; the pattern repeats every 26 December and 1 January.

What to expect
The two main parades fall on Boxing Day, 26 December, and New Year's Day, 1 January, starting in the pre-dawn hours, roughly one in the morning, and running past sunrise along Bay Street in downtown Nassau. Bleacher seats are ticketed and sell out, but much of the route can be watched free from the crowd. Nights are warm. There are also junior and family Junkanoo events through the season and rushes on other islands, but the New Providence Boxing Day and New Year parades are the flagship. Arrive very early for a good vantage point.
Getting there & around
The parades run along Bay Street in downtown Nassau, walking distance from the cruise port and most city hotels and a short drive from Lynden Pindling airport. Ticketed grandstand seats are sold through official outlets ahead of each parade and the best sell out early, while the street is free to watch if you come hours before the start. Book Nassau lodging well ahead for the Christmas-New Year window, and plan for a middle-of-the-night start and a late, joyful morning.
