Why go
Heiva i Tahiti is the beating heart of the Tahitian cultural year, and Papeete is where you witness it. Across two weeks each July, district troupes of hundreds of dancers and drummers compete at the open-air To'ata amphitheater on the Papeete waterfront, staging the ori Tahiti dance forms, the layered himene choral singing and the thunder of the to'ere log drums, in costumes woven from plant fibre and shell. First held in 1881, Heiva began as a celebration tied to the July festivities and grew into a fiercely contested competition that has kept Maohi language, legend and dance alive through generations. Sitting in the crowd as a group tells an ancestral story through synchronised movement, judged on choreography, costume and chant, is the single best way to understand Polynesian culture from the inside. Around the main stage the festival spreads into sport, craft and canoe events across the city.
When it runs
Held each July at the To'ata amphitheater on the Papeete waterfront, organized by Te Fare Tauhiti Nui (Maison de la Culture), with district troupes competing in Tahitian dance, himene singing and drumming across roughly two weeks of evening performances. Upcoming: 2 to 18 July 2026 (main nights 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 17, 18 July); 2027 dates fall in July and are confirmed by the organizer nearer the time.

What to expect
Heiva i Tahiti runs across roughly two weeks in July at the To'ata amphitheater, with competition performances on set evening dates and a closing prize-giving. In 2026 the festival runs 2 to 18 July, with the main nights on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 17 and 18 July. The competition format can vary year to year, and some years are staged as a non-competitive gala rather than a contest, so check the official program. Evenings are warm and the amphitheater is open-air, and popular nights sell out.
Getting there & around
The To'ata amphitheater sits on the Papeete seafront, walking distance from the city center, the market and most downtown hotels, and a short drive from Faa'a international airport. Tickets for the competition evenings are sold through the organizer and local outlets and go on sale in the weeks before the festival; the best nights sell out, so buy ahead. July is peak season across the islands, so book flights and rooms early if you are timing a trip around Heiva.
