Why go
For a weekend at the end of July the walled town of San Marino throws itself back to the Middle Ages. The Giornate Medioevali fill the streets, squares and ramparts with costumed processions, medieval markets and taverns, music and dance, and demonstrations of the crafts and arms of the period, from smiths and falconers to the crossbowmen and flag-throwers who are part of the republic's real ceremonial tradition. The steep lanes of the historic centre and the tower-fortresses make an unusually convincing backdrop, so the re-enactment reads less as a stage set than as the old republic briefly switched back on. Evenings bring torch-lit processions and shows on the main squares. For a traveller it is the liveliest time to see San Marino, a small country leaning fully into the medieval identity that its UNESCO-listed centre and its crossbow palios keep alive the rest of the year.

What to expect
A festival held over the last weekend of July, usually across three to four days, filling the pedestrian historic centre of San Marino with daytime markets and displays and torch-lit evening processions. It is high summer on an exposed ridge, so days are hot and the lanes are busy; some shows and banquets are ticketed while the street programme is free. Getting there & around
The festival takes over the walled old town of San Marino, all pedestrian and steep. San Marino has no airport; arrive by road or the seasonal bus from Rimini, about 40 minutes, or the cable car from Borgo Maggiore. The street markets, parades and displays are free to walk among; some evening banquets and set-piece shows are ticketed through the festival. Accommodation on the ridge is limited and books up for the weekend, so many visitors stay in Rimini and come up for the day or evening.
