Why go
The Festival del Caribe, better known as the Fiesta del Fuego, is Santiago de Cuba's great Afro-Caribbean street festival. Founded in 1981 by the Casa del Caribe, it fills the first week of July with rumba and folkloric troupes, drumming, comparsas, and academic gatherings on Caribbean culture and religion, alongside processions that wind through the old city. It closes with the Desfile de la Serpiente down Calle Heredia and the ritual burning of a giant effigy of the devil, the fire that gives the fiesta its name. Each year the festival is dedicated to a different Caribbean country or culture; the 2026 edition honoured Colombia. This is the raw, drum-driven Santiago that Havana's polish never reaches.

What to expect
The festival runs the first week of July, most recently July 3 to 9, in the heat and humidity of a Santiago summer. Events spread across the Casa del Caribe, Calle Heredia, the Teatro Heredia and the streets, most of them free and outdoors. The closing serpent parade and the burning of the devil are the highlights. July is hot and often wet, so pace yourself and carry water.
Getting there & around
Santiago sits at the far eastern end of the island, best reached by a domestic flight from Havana rather than the long drive. Casas particulares fill for the festival, so book beds well ahead. Most of the programme is free and street-based, with the Casa del Caribe posting the schedule as the dates approach.
