Why go
The Festival International de Musique Symphonique d'El Jem puts world-class orchestras inside a Roman amphitheatre, and the venue is the whole point. El Jem's amphitheatre is one of the largest and best preserved anywhere, a three-tier sandstone oval that once held around thirty-five thousand spectators and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Through July and August the festival stages international symphony orchestras, soloists and conductors under the open sky within the ancient walls, the stone catching and carrying the sound the way it once carried the roar of the crowd. The programme leans classical, from full symphonies to opera galas, and the setting, a floodlit colosseum rising straight out of a quiet farming town, turns a concert into something closer to a pilgrimage. It has run every summer since the mid-1980s and reaches its 39th edition in 2026.

What to expect
The festival runs across July and August, with concerts on set evenings rather than every night, so check the programme and book the dates you want. Summer days in central Tunisia are hot and dry, but performances are after dark when the amphitheatre cools. Seating is on the ancient stone tiers, so a cushion and a light layer for later in the evening help. The town is small and the amphitheatre is its centrepiece, floodlit for the concerts.
Getting there & around
El Jem is on the main rail line and road between Sousse and Sfax, about an hour from Sousse or Monastir and their airports, which makes the festival an easy evening trip with the amphitheatre right by the station. The town has only a few small hotels, so many concertgoers stay in Sousse, Monastir or Mahdia and drive in for the evening. Buy tickets ahead for the bigger orchestras and confirm the concert dates from the official programme.
