Why go
Every two years Brazzaville turns into the meeting point of African music at FESPAM, the Pan-African Music Festival. Created in 1996 under the aegis of the African Union, it is one of the continent's oldest and largest music gatherings, bringing artists, bands, researchers and record-industry people from across Africa and its diaspora to a week of concerts, a scholarly symposium on African music, and MUSAF, a market of African music. The 2025 edition, the twelfth, ran in late July and marked thirty years of the festival, with Congolese rumba, inscribed by UNESCO in 2021, at the heart of the programming. Brazzaville is the natural home for it: the city and its twin Kinshasa across the river are where rumba was born, and the festival threads live music through concert halls, the riverfront and neighbourhood venues. For a traveler it is the best single window into Central African music, on the ground where the sound was invented, rather than at a distance on a playlist.
When it runs
Biennial, in odd-numbered years, over about a week in late July, in Brazzaville. The 12th edition ran 19 to 26 July 2025, marking the festival's 30th anniversary; the next edition is expected in July 2027.

What to expect
FESPAM is biennial, held in odd-numbered years in late July, so it lands in Brazzaville's drier, cooler season. The programme mixes ticketed headline concerts with free open-air shows, the MUSAF market and a symposium, spread across the city over about a week. Between editions the city keeps a strong live-music culture in its bars and clubs. Confirm the exact dates and venues through the official festival channels ahead of a trip.
Getting there & around
Brazzaville has an international airport and is the arrival point for the northern parks, so FESPAM can be paired with a wildlife trip in a single journey. Festival events run across the city; central hotels fill during the festival, so book ahead for a FESPAM year. Carry cash in local francs for tickets and venues. Check your government advisory for the Republic of the Congo before travel; central Brazzaville is the normal base.
