Why go
Inti Raymi, the Inca Festival of the Sun, is Latin America's grandest historical reenactment: every June 24 more than 700 performers stage the empire's winter-solstice ceremony across three sites in Cusco, opening at the Qorikancha sun temple, moving through the Plaza de Armas, and culminating on the megalithic esplanade of Sacsayhuaman above the city. The modern staging dates to 1944 and is run by EMUFEC, Cusco's municipal festivities company, so it comes with a fixed date, a published program, and ticketed seating at Sacsayhuaman, while the Qorikancha and plaza stages are free to stand at. The week around it is Cusco's festive peak, with the whole city in procession season.

Fly into Cusco (CUZ) via Lima. June 24 sits in Cusco's highest tourist season, so book flights and rooms two to three months out, and combine the festival with Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley plans carefully since everything is at peak demand the same week. Guided festival packages bundle Sacsayhuaman tickets, transport up to the esplanade, and commentary that makes the Quechua-language ceremony legible.
