Why go
Chale Wote is West Africa's wildest street art party, and for one week each August it takes over the historic streets of James Town. Since 2011 the festival, whose name means 'friend, let's go' in Ga, has turned the neighborhood into an open-air canvas of murals, graffiti, projection, performance, spoken word, film and processions, with sound systems, skate ramps and pop-up markets between the colonial forts and the fishing harbor. It is produced by the arts collective ACCRA [dot] ALT and grew from a small alternative-arts gathering into a magnet for tens of thousands of artists and visitors from across the continent and the diaspora. Entry is free, and the energy is set by the community itself rather than a corporate stage. Come for the art, but the real show is James Town in full flow, its lighthouse, its boxers and its boats absorbed into the carnival.
When it runs
Held in James Town, Accra for about a week in the second half of August each year, free to attend, with dates announced by ACCRA [dot] ALT around June. Upcoming: expected mid-to-late August 2026 and again in August 2027.

What to expect
Chale Wote runs for about a week in the second half of August, with the Friday-to-Sunday finale the most intense stretch of parades and performances. The exact dates are announced by ACCRA [dot] ALT, usually around June. August is warm, humid and one of Accra's drier spells. It is free and open-air, so come early on the main days to beat the crowds into the narrowest streets.
Getting there & around
James Town sits on the coast at the western edge of central Accra, a short taxi or ride-hailing trip from most of the city, and everything happens on foot once you arrive. Accra's Kotoka International Airport is about 30 minutes away. The festival is free, but central Accra hotels fill up over the festival week, so book ahead and expect busy roads around the district.
