Why go
Carnaval de Luanda is the best window into Angola's living music, the annual parade where the capital's neighbourhood groups compete along the seafront Marginal in the rhythms that gave the world semba, the root of Brazilian samba. Over the Carnival weekend, associations from across Luanda process in costume before huge crowds and a panel of judges, dancing semba, kabetula, kazukuta and dizanda to live percussion, each group carrying its own story and colours. The event is more than a party: since independence it has doubled as a celebration of Angolan identity and resilience, staged and funded by the provincial government, and it draws thousands to the redeveloped bayfront promenade. For a traveler, it is a chance to hear semba and its cousins performed at full volume in the street, in the city where they were born, rather than in a club playlist. There is no single ticket; you join the crowds along the route and follow the drums.
When it runs
Held once a year during the Carnival season, in February or March depending on the movable Carnival date, along Luanda's seafront Marginal. The 2025 parade ran from 1 to 3 March; the 2026 dates follow the Carnival calendar and are confirmed by the provincial government closer to the time.

What to expect
Carnaval falls in the Carnival season, so the date moves with the calendar, landing in February or March; the main parade runs over about three days on Luanda's Marginal, with the big procession on the final day. It is hot and humid, and the crowds are large and dense along the seafront, so sun cover, water and an early spot matter. Between editions, semba and kizomba are easy to find in the city's live-music venues.
Getting there & around
The parade runs along the Marginal, Luanda's curving bayfront avenue in the centre of the city, easily reached on foot or by taxi from central hotels, which fill over the Carnival weekend, so book ahead. There is no organiser selling entry; the provincial government stages the route and you watch from the public stands and pavements. Carry cash in kwanza and keep valuables secure in the crowds. Angola issues an e-visa or visa on arrival for many nationalities; check current rules and your government advisory before travel.
