Why go
Carnaval de Las Tablas is the biggest and most opulent Carnival in Panama, and for four days before Ash Wednesday this small Azuero town of a few thousand people swells with tens of thousands of revellers. The whole event is built around a rivalry: the town splits into two neighbourhoods, Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo, and each crowns its own Carnival queen and spends the year and a small fortune building competing allegorical floats, importing fireworks and staging ever more lavish parades to outdo the other. By day the streets run with the culecos, where tanker trucks and hoses spray the dancing crowds to keep them cool under the Azuero sun, and by night the queens process on their floats in dazzling costumes and hand-embroidered polleras, the national dress this region is famous for making. It is loud, wet, competitive and deeply Panamanian, a folk tradition rather than a tourist show, held in the cradle of the country's folklore. Going means throwing yourself into one side's crowd, wearing clothes you do not mind soaking, and watching a town pour everything it has into four days of rivalry and celebration.
When it runs
Held over the four days before Ash Wednesday each year, Saturday to Shrove Tuesday, so the dates move with Lent (usually February, sometimes early March). Two rival neighbourhood tunas, Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo, compete with floats, rival queens, live music and nightly water-throwing culecos. Upcoming: 6 to 9 February 2027.

What to expect
Carnival always falls on the four days ending on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, so the exact dates shift each year with the church calendar, usually landing in February and occasionally early March; in 2027 it runs 6 to 9 February. The culecos are wet by design, so expect to be sprayed and dress accordingly. The Azuero dry season means hot, bright days. This is a small town hosting a national-scale crowd, so accommodation for many kilometres around books out months ahead and prices climb. The heat, dense crowds and long nights are the main things to prepare for.
Getting there & around
Las Tablas is on the Azuero Peninsula, around four to five hours by road from Panama City or a short drive from Chitre. There is no ticket and no single organiser: the celebration is free and happens in the streets around Parque Porras, run by the two rival neighbourhood groups. The catch is lodging, which sells out across the whole peninsula months in advance, so many visitors stay in Chitre or Pedasi and travel in, or make it a day trip. Bring cash, wear quick-drying clothes and shoes you can soak in the culecos, protect your phone in a waterproof pouch, and pace yourself across the long, hot days and late nights.
