Why here
The Vevcani Carnival claims fourteen centuries of continuity and behaves like it: every January 13-14, for old-calendar New Year, this springs-fed village above Struga masks itself in homemade costumes of pagan spirits, political satire, and the stock figures of the bridegroom, the bride, and August the Stupid, then burns the masks at the end to close the year. It is pre-Lenten carnival logic on the Julian calendar, fiercely local, juried, and satirical enough that politicians check the papers nervously each January. Visitors are welcome in the crowd and in costume; the village's cold mountain springs and ora dancing carry the two days between processions.
Best months
Annual, fixed on January 13-14 for old-calendar New Year. Expect snow, mountain cold, and rakija offered against both. The processions are free street events; the village fills, so day-trip from Struga or Ohrid if beds are gone.
Getting there & around
Vevcani is twenty minutes from Struga and under an hour from Ohrid airport. Winter tires or a local driver for the hill road in snow.
