Why here

Venice's carnival is the masked one, rooted in documented tradition from the eleventh century, revived in 1979, and staged today by the city itself through its operating company Vela: eighteen days of grand openings on the water, costume contests in Piazza San Marco, and masked figures posing in the fog at dawn for anyone up early enough. What lifts it beyond spectacle is the participatory craft layer: historic ateliers like Ca' Macana, whose masks appeared in Eyes Wide Shut, run hands-on mask-making workshops, so you can build your disguise before wearing it. The 2027 edition runs January 23 to February 9.

Late January into February; the 2027 dates are January 23 to February 9. Cold, often foggy, exactly as it should look. The final weekend is extreme; Venice's day-visitor access fee applies on peak days, and lodging wants six months' notice.
