Why here
Tikal is the most powerful ancient city to visit in the Maya world, and part of what makes it extraordinary is that the jungle never left. Steep-sided temple-pyramids climb above the forest canopy, some more than sixty metres tall, in a city that ruled a large part of the Maya lowlands for centuries before it was abandoned around a thousand years ago. Because it lies inside a protected national park, the ruins share the site with spider and howler monkeys, ocellated turkeys, toucans and coatis, and the soundscape at dawn and dusk is as memorable as the architecture. The classic experience is the sunrise walk, standing on or below a temple as the forest wakes and howler monkeys roar out of the mist. It is remote, in the far north near Flores, but it is the single most compelling reason to travel to Guatemala's Peten.
Best months
Tikal is open all year, but the dry season from about November to April is the most comfortable and the easiest underfoot; the rainy months are hotter, more humid and muddier, though also lush and green. Wildlife is most active at dawn and late afternoon, which is when the site is at its best and least crowded. It is hot and humid jungle, so bring water, sun and insect protection. Sunrise tours enter the park before first light.
Getting there & around
Most visitors base in Flores or the lakeside village of El Remate, an hour from the ruins, and reach Tikal by guided tour or shuttle. Flores has an airport with short flights from Guatemala City, which saves a long overland journey of eight hours or more. Sunrise and standard day tours run with local guides; a guide is well worth it for reading both the archaeology and the wildlife. Bring water, closed shoes for uneven stone and forest trails, sun protection and insect repellent, and allow most of a day inside the park.
