Kiribati's capital atoll in the Gilbert Islands, a thin ribbon of islets around a wide lagoon. Its western tip, Betio, was the ground of the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943, and rusting guns, bunkers and wrecks still line the shore and shallows.
Why here
For three days in November 1943 the islet of Betio, at the western end of Tarawa Atoll, was one of the bloodiest square miles of the Pacific War. In Operation Galvanic the US Marines landed against a dug-in Japanese garrison across an exposed reef, and more than six thousand men died taking a strip of coral smaller than New York's Central Park. Eighty years on, Betio is a living battlefield. Massive Japanese coastal guns still point out to sea, concrete bunkers and command posts stand where they fell, and at low tide the reef gives up landing craft, tanks and ship wrecks. This is not a museum with railings, it is a working island town built around the relics, and you walk it with a local guide who carries the stories. Few travellers reach Kiribati, so you often have the sites to yourself, in the heat and quiet of an equatorial atoll far from any tour crowd.
Best months
The Betio sites are open ground you visit on foot with a guide, so go early to beat the equatorial midday heat, carry water and sun cover, and wear closed shoes for rusted metal and coral. Low tide is best for seeing the offshore wrecks and landing craft in the shallows. The battle's anniversary falls on 20 to 23 November, a meaningful time to visit, while the drier, slightly less humid months run roughly May to October.
Getting there & around
Tarawa is reached by air via Fiji (Suva/Nadi) or Nauru/Brisbane on limited schedules, so build in buffer days for delays. Most visitors stay in South Tarawa near Betio, where the WWII sites cluster within a short drive; the causeway road is the spine of the atoll. Arrange the battlefield tour and a guide in advance through a local operator, as sites are unsigned and spread among houses and workshops. Bring cash, as card acceptance is minimal.
