Witness / Attend in St. MoritzCH
The Engadin resort that invented winter tourism, where the frozen lake becomes a sporting arena each winter: horse racing at White Turf and the world's only high-goal snow polo.
Why here
Nowhere else does sport happen on a frozen lake at this level. White Turf, run since 1907, is the only official horse racing on snow in the world, three February Sundays of flat racing, trotting and skikjöring, where riderless horses tow skiers at 50 km/h across the ice. The Snow Polo World Cup, held since 1985, is the only high-goal polo tournament played on snow anywhere. Both unfold on St. Moritz's lake against the Engadin peaks with a champagne-and-furs social theater that is half the spectacle. Free general access to much of the lake arena keeps it more democratic than the reputation suggests, and the town around it invented the whole idea of the winter season.
Best months
Snow Polo takes the last weekend of January, White Turf the first three Sundays of February, all dependent on lake ice thickness, which organizers monitor and which climate volatility has occasionally disrupted. Engadin winter is high, dry and often brilliantly sunny at 1,800 meters, but standing on a frozen lake demands serious layers. General admission areas are free or cheap; grandstands and hospitality tents sell ahead and anchor the social scene.
Getting there & around
Zurich airport is about three and a half hours by rail, the last stretch on the UNESCO-listed Albula line, which is an event in itself. Engadin airport serves private aviation. St. Moritz accommodation in high season is the most expensive in the Alps; Celerina, Pontresina and Samedan sit minutes away by train at gentler rates. Event weekends book out months ahead. The lake arena is walkable from the town center.
