Why here
Actun Tunichil Muknal, the ATM cave, is one of the great archaeological experiences anywhere, and the single most extraordinary thing you can do in Belize. The trip starts with a jungle hike and three river crossings, then you swim into the mouth of the cave and wade and scramble upstream in the dark for about an hour. Deep inside, the Maya left the traces of sacrificial rituals: ceramic pots, offerings and around fourteen human skeletons calcified into the cave floor, the most famous a young adult now called the Crystal Maiden, glittering where minerals have crystallised over the bones. It has been closed to cameras since 2012, after a tourist dropped one on a skull, so you carry nothing and simply look. Only a handful of guides hold Institute of Archaeology permits to lead it, and groups are small. This is Witness in its fullest sense, standing inside an undisturbed Maya underworld.
Best months
A full-day guided trip only; independent entry is banned. Expect a 45-minute jungle hike with river crossings, then swimming and wading through cave water for hours, so you need to be a confident swimmer of moderate fitness. Closed-toe shoes you can soak are required and cameras are prohibited inside. Tours run year-round, but the cave can close after heavy rain raises the river, most likely from June to November.
Getting there & around
Tours leave from San Ignacio, about a 45-minute drive to the reserve car park followed by the hike in. San Ignacio is roughly two hours west of Belize City by road and is the natural base, with guesthouses, restaurants and other tour operators. Book ahead in high season, as the Institute of Archaeology caps the number of visitors and guides each day.

GuideMayaWalk Tours is a Belizean-owned San Ignacio operator and was among the first companies authorised to guide visitors through Actun Tunichil Muknal. Its ATM trip is an eight to nine hour day with a 45-minute jungle hike, three river crossings and hours of wading through the cave to the Cathedral chamber, where roughly twenty-one Maya skeletons and scattered ceramics remain in place. Guides are licensed and hold groups to six guests each, with a home-cooked Belizean lunch included.

GuidePacz Tours is a San Ignacio operator that has guided the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave for over 28 years and holds the Institute of Archaeology permit required to lead it. Trips run in small groups of no more than six guests per guide, with CPR-certified guides, professional helmets and LED headlamps, and a firm conservation line, including the no-camera rule inside the cave since the 2012 ban. Guides centre the tour on the Maya ritual context and the Crystal Maiden, the cave's calcified skeleton.
