Why here
Samarkand is the showpiece of the Silk Road, and the Registan is its centre, a square framed on three sides by the towering portals of the Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori madrasahs. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, their ribbed domes and tilework in deep blue and gold are the image most people carry of Uzbekistan. The city holds far more within a short ride: the fluted turquoise dome of the Gur-e-Amir, the tomb of Timur, the ruined giant of the Bibi-Khanym mosque, and the Shah-i-Zinda avenue of mausoleums, whose glazed corridors are among the most beautiful tiled spaces in the Islamic world. This is a place to witness slowly, ideally with a guide to read the inscriptions and the story of Timur and his astronomer grandson Ulugh Beg.
Best months
Samarkand is at its best in spring and autumn, roughly April to early June and September to October, when days are warm and the light on the tilework is clean. Summer is very hot and dry, winter cold with occasional snow that looks striking against the domes. The Registan is open year round and floodlit in the evenings, with a sound-and-light show on some nights. Modest dress is appreciated at the working mosque and the mausoleums.
Getting there & around
Samarkand is one of the easiest Silk Road cities to reach, about two hours from Tashkent on the Afrosiyob high-speed train, with onward fast trains to Bukhara. The Registan, Gur-e-Amir and Bibi-Khanym sit within the walkable old core, while Shah-i-Zinda and the Ulugh Beg observatory are short taxi rides. Most visitors base in the old town for two or three nights and take the monuments with a local guide.
