A wedge of beach, mangrove and coastal forest just across the estuary from Libreville, one of the world's most important nesting sites for the giant leatherback turtle, reachable as a short boat trip from the capital.
Why here
Gabon is the single most important nesting country on earth for the leatherback, the largest of all sea turtles, and Pongara is where you can watch it happen almost within sight of Libreville. Between November and March, thousands of leatherback nests are laid along Pongara's roughly thirty-five kilometres of Atlantic beach, and on a guided night walk you can see a female the size of a small car haul herself out of the surf, dig, and lay by red torchlight, then watch hatchlings scramble seaward earlier or later in the season. The local NGO Aventures Sans Frontieres has monitored and protected these beaches since 1996, running a hatchery and a small turtle information centre, so the visit doubles as a look at the conservation effort that keeps the colony alive. The park is only about fifteen minutes by boat from the city, which makes this world-class wildlife spectacle unusually easy to reach, and from June to August the same waters host migrating humpback whales.
Best months
The leatherback nesting season runs from November to March, with the peak of nesting females around December and January and hatchlings emerging through the season; outside those months there are no turtles. Viewing is on foot at night on soft sand, led by trained guides who keep lights and distance controlled to protect the animals. Nights are warm and humid. The whale season is a separate June-to-August window.
Getting there & around
Pongara is reached by a short boat crossing of the Komo estuary from Libreville, so it can be done as an overnight from the capital, staying at one of the small beach lodges. Night turtle walks are guided and seasonal, arranged through the conservation NGO or a lodge; independent night access to nesting beaches is not allowed. Bring a red-filtered torch, insect protection and shoes for soft sand. An e-visa is required for most visitors; check your government advisory for Gabon before travel.

It tags and tracks nesting females, runs a hatchery, and operates a sea turtle information centre and small museum at Pongara, and it leads the guided night walks that let visitors watch leatherbacks nest between November and March under controlled, low-impact conditions.
