Ouidah is the spiritual home of Vodun, and its January festival is the fullest public expression of the religion anywhere in the world. Once known as the Fete du Vodoun, marked on 10 January as Benin's national day of traditional religions, it has grown into Vodun Days, a three-day celebration staged along the historic Route des Esclaves and by the Door of No Return where enslaved Africans were shipped to the Americas. The programme runs the Great Vodun Ceremony with high priests and dignitaries, daytime processions of initiates and masked spirits pouring out of the temples, drumming, and evening concerts by African stars. This is the source religion carried to Haiti, Cuba and Brazil, celebrated on the ground where much of that history began. For a first-time visitor it is one of the most powerful cultural events in Africa, sacred and public at once, best approached with a guide who can read the ceremonies with respect.
Best months
Vodun Days falls on 8 to 10 January, with 10 January the long-standing national holiday and ceremonial climax. Early January is the dry Harmattan season on the coast, warm by day with a dusty haze and cooler nights, comfortable for the long days outdoors. The main ceremonies draw dense crowds along the beach and the slave route, so arrive early for a good vantage point and follow local guidance on which rites welcome outsiders and photography.
Getting there & around
Ouidah is about 40 kilometres west of Cotonou and its Cardinal Bernardin Gantin International Airport, around an hour by road. Benin issues a quick online e-visa for most visitors. Accommodation in and around Ouidah sells out far ahead for the festival, so book months in advance or plan to stay in Cotonou and travel in; an official festival village and camping area also operate. A local guide is strongly recommended to interpret the ceremonies and navigate cultural sensitivities.
