The Bolshoi is the reason to sit in a Moscow audience. The company traces its founding to 1776, and the columned theatre on Theatre Square, rebuilt after fire and fully restored in 2011, is one of the grand stages of world ballet and opera. Seeing Swan Lake or a Tchaikovsky opera in the historic hall, under the chandelier and the tiers of red and gold, is a different experience from any touring production. The repertoire runs the Russian classical canon the company created, from Petipa ballets to Boris Godunov, on both the Historic Stage and the smaller New Stage. Tickets are sold in rubles at the theatre box office and through the official site, and the season runs from autumn to summer with a full winter programme. Around it, Theatre Square, the Kremlin museums and Red Square make the centre a dense cultural day. This is an ongoing performance institution rather than a one-off festival, so you choose a date from the published playbill. It sits, like everything in the country, under a Do Not Travel advisory, and the practical barriers to attending from abroad are real.

The Bolshoi performs a full season from roughly September to July, dark for part of the summer. Winter is the heart of the ballet and opera calendar and also the busiest for the marquee titles, so book well ahead. Performances are on the Historic Stage and the New Stage; the historic hall is the one to aim for. There is no single festival week; you pick a performance from the monthly playbill. Dress is smart. The theatre is on Theatre Square, central and on the metro.

US State Department Level 4 Do Not Travel per travel.state.gov (as of 2026-07), reissued 29 December 2025, citing Russia's war against Ukraine, the significant risk of wrongful detention of US nationals, terrorism, and drone incidents in Moscow. US consular services in Russia are suspended. There are no direct flights from most of Europe and North America since 2022, so arrival is via a third country. Foreign bank cards do not work in Russia; the Bolshoi sells tickets in rubles at its box office and on bolshoi.ru, which is hard to reach and pay on from abroad, so many foreign visitors buy on arrival. The theatre is on Theatre Square, central and served by the metro. Avoid resale sites, which are not the theatre.
